"In the time of the butterflies" Review - by Julia Alvarez

My rating: 4/5

This book is about the Mirabal family, back in the 50s and 60s in Puerto Rico. They have 4 daughters: Patria, DeDe, Minerva, and Maria Teresa. The story follows the girls until they grow up to be adults, and find their way in the revolutionary movement against their dictator, Trujillo.

Each chapter of the book is from the perspective of one of the sisters, and Maria’s is in the form of a diary. I’m not actually sure why, but I liked these chapters way better than the others. But all in all, the book was perfect. The characters were fully developed and believable. The dialogues made sense. Everything was in its place. The only thing that made my read a little slow, was that the pace of the events in the book was really slow at the beginning and for me, it was a little boring. And also, I’m not that into political or revolution-oriented stories, and that’s why I’m giving it a rating of 4. But I highly recommend you to read this one!
