Johnny got his gun, by Dalton Trumbo
My rating: 5/5
I found out about this book in a rather unusual way; through one of Metalica's songs, One. The song is written about this book, and when it says "Land wars, have taken my sight, taken my speech, taken my hearing,
Taken my arms, taken my legs, taken my soul, left me with life in hell."
You can not, not be interested! Or at least curious to find out what this is about, can it really be like that? A man who has lost his arms, legs, eyes, ears, jaw, and nose, I mean, he's going to go crazy in his own mind, isn't he?
War is not my choice of genre, and I'm not really into it, but this is no ordinary war story. Since Joe Bonham has lost every way possible to contact with the outside world, all the book happens in his mind; inner monologues and flashbacks and sometimes dreams. I cannot tell you how mesmerized I was by the monologues. They were simple, and yet so astonishing and attractive.
If you don't like the kind of texts and novels with just a teeny tiny touch of philosophy, or the ones filled with monologues and inner speech, well, you may wanna skip this one. But otherwise, you HAVE to read it. Don't miss it!
