Brock & Lark Review (by Anthony McGowan)

I can’t believe how underrated these books are. They were amazing. Perfect. Touching. There are a few writers (and hence, books) that can make you care for the character and laugh and cry and feel anxious all in under 100 pages.

Both “Brock” and “Lark” form a series of 4 books about Kenny and Nicky, two brothers living with their depressed father and unemployed father, after their mother left them when they were little. Kenny has Dyslexia and Nicky is the one who has to look after both his brother and his father despite his young age.

I am not going to summarize the plots for you, I’m just gonna tell you to READ IT. They are both really short and are designed in a way to help people with Dyslexia to read: the chapters are short and the language is simple. But how McGowany uses language is so incredible. Not one word is wasted. He managed to touch my feelings by writing so little words, that I don’t think no one will ever be able to do again. They were incredible and I am going to read the other two books of the series for sure.
